Facebook's Internet.org Started in India for Health, Education, Jobs and Communication

"Over the last year, we've rolled out Internet.org free basic services to countries with more than 150 million people total across Africa and Latin America" Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's co-founder and CEO, said in a post on his Facebook page announcing the launch. "More than 6 million people are already connected to the internet who previously weren't, and we have started hearing incredible stories about how the internet is changing lives and communities."

Some of the services offered include Facebook , Dictionary.com, BBC News, BabyCenter & MAMA which provides information about pregnancy and childcare, Facts for Life, health and hygiene information; Girl Effect, articles and tips for girls; Reuters Market Lite, farming and crop information; TimesJobs, Translator, Wikipedia and wikiHow. Internet.org, an effort to provide free mobile Internet to developing markets, launched in India this week, Facebook announced late Monday.

The photo below is from Zuck visit in October to Chandauli, a small rural village in northern India that recently got connected to the internet. Students at this computer center were learning to use the internet for the first time.
